Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) has developed three advanced palm-based technologies for commercialisation. The three are among the technologies that have been approved by the Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities for commercialisation.
One the three breakthrough technologies is the process and formulation of Palm Vitamin E / Tocotrienol Rich Fraction Chewable Tablet which bagged a Gold Medal Award at the 28th International Invention, Innovation and Technology Exhibition (ITEX 2018).
Palm Tocotrienol Rich Fraction Chewable Tablet is a healthy, nutritious, delicious and multi-flavoured chewable tablet with palm Vitamin E or tocotrienol-rich fraction (TRF) as the primary active ingredient. Tocotrienol-rich fraction consists of 70-80 percent of potent tocotrienols and 20-30 percent of tocopherols which possesses myriad of health-enhancing benefits such as tackling vitamin E deficiency.
Vitamin E / TRF is an antioxidant that slows the ageing process and protects against cell destruction through oxidation of valuable nutrients in the body provided by the food you eat. TRF provides anti-ageing, anti-cancer, antiinflammatory, cholesterol-lowering and anti-diabetic properties, and many other health-enhancing benefits and is good for skin, eyes, hair and nails.
Local manufacturers are encouraged to commercialise the TRF chewable tablet as it has great potential to be marketed as fortified or functional food or as a health supplement or nutraceutical product.
This technology will encourage local manufacturers to use palmbased oils and derivatives in the value-added food formulation that will widen application of palm-based oils and derivatives in the industry.
MPOB has also developed palm oil-based polyol for floorcoverings for indoor and outdoor and sports flooring markets.
Polyurethane made from palm-oil based polyol is used to coat back side of carpet to protect stitched artificial grass. Polyurethane coating has a good compressive strength and also provides cushioning effect. Besides, polyurethane coating based on palm oil polyol serves as an environmentally friendly and durable product.
These products will increase and diversify the usage of palm oil in adhesives products. This technology is a value addition to palm products and offer renewable palm-based coating to various industries and consumers.
Another technology developed by MPOB is the process and formulation of moisturising hand sanitiser with Vitamin E. This technology has diversified the application of palm oleochemicals and Vitamin E in cleansing products. It enhances MPOB’s image in addressing the COVID-19 related issues.
Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, hand sanitiser is highly sought to sanitise the hands and to prevent the infection of the COVID-19 virus. Conventional hand sanitiser mainly comprises alcohol, which may dry up the skin upon frequent exposure and lead to damaging skin conditions. With MPOB’s formulation, the hand sanitiser is enriched with glycerine and palm vitamin E.
Besides sanitising the hands, it also enhances the skin hydration and protects the skin against the damaging free radicals. Local manufacturers and SMEs should take the opportunity to commercialise these breakthrough palm-based technologies as they offer great potential to be marketed globally.
